FRAME Scientific Officer Dr Rita Seabra presented a poster at the International Courses on Toxicology 2009 in Portugal. The meeting was entitled “Mitochondria: between life and death” and focused on mitochondria as major players in cell biology.
This is an interesting field as mitochondrial impairment often leads to organ toxicity. Pharmaceutical companies are exploring methods to predict mitochondrial toxicity early during drug development, with cell models and in silico tools being promising approaches. The poster aimed to raise awareness to the importance of mitochondria-based assays for the 3Rs.
