Stem cell toxicity model
The Embryonic Stem cell-based Novel Alternative Testing Strategies (ESNATS) project was described at the European Society for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EUSAAT) Congress in Linz, Austria.
Five years work have resulted in a proof of concept study that demonstrated how the model could be used to identify substances that cause developmental toxicity.
The model is part of a package of tests that are hoped to provide an integrated system for investigating reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, metabolism and toxicokinetics during drug development. It is believed the system will be more effective than animal testing.
The next stage is to develop the system further so it can be used on an industrial scale.
