Just before the summer holidays, I was asked to review the Nuffield Council on Bioethics report on The Ethics of Research Involving Animals (1). Generally, I hate to take work with me when on vacation, but this time there was no escape. My agenda didn’t allow me to avoid it. So, with great reluctance, I packed the report in my suitcase, together with a few novels, and left for France. There, something of a miracle happened. At the camp site, somewhere on the sunny French coast, with a nice bottle of wine on the table, I started reading and... couldn’t stop.
