The past few years have witnessed a major change in the drug development process. The creation of large chemical libraries together with the ability to express receptors or other molecular targets in a convenient cell type now permit many compounds to be tested against a putative therapeutic target in a rapid, parallel assay format — so-called high throughput screening (HTS).
