This supplement consists of papers which were presented at two meetings on reduction which were held in the UK in April 2001 and in October 2002. The first, entitled Scientists, Statisticians, Ethical Review Process (ERP) Members and Trainers:Optimising Animal Use by Enhanced Teamwork, was organised in conjunction with the Laboratory Animal Science Association (LASA) Alternatives Section, at GlaxoSmithKline, Harlow, UK. The aim of the meeting was to investigate how the various parties could work together to achieve reduction and, in particular, to focus on ways of improving the consultation process between scientists and statisticians. The second meeting was the first FRAME Reduction Committee Symposium, entitled Reduction — Current Status and Future Prospects, which was held in London. The main purpose of the symposium was to enable researchers to share information on reduction techniques with other scientists.
