The workshop was held in Cambridge on 27–29 June 2007, with the main aim of discussing strategies to develop, validate, and gain regulatory acceptance of in vitro models that are mechanistically based, and involve endpoints of clinical relevance, for assessing the toxicological impact of inhaled substances. A second aim was to explore the need to establish a network of interested stakeholders, to promote the recommendations arising from the discussion. The objective was to produce a report that reflected the outcome of the workshop and to make some recommendations for the way ahead.
